Quick summary: Gentari, the clean energy arm of Petronas, signed an MoU with BYD Malaysia on 21 October 2026 in Shenzhen. The plan is to explore bringing BYD Flash Charging to Malaysia, paired with battery energy storage. BYD claims about 400 km of range in as little as five minutes for compatible cars, under optimal conditions. It’s still exploratory. No sites, charger numbers, prices or launch dates yet.
If you’ve ever sat at a highway R&R watching your battery percentage crawl up, you’ll want to read this. BYD Flash Charging in Malaysia is one step closer. Gentari, which already runs a sizeable charging network here, will study how to put BYD’s megawatt-level chargers along our main intercity routes.
But don’t get too excited yet. An MoU is an agreement to explore. Not a rollout plan. Nobody has said where or when the first one opens.
What did Gentari and BYD sign?
The MoU was signed in Shenzhen, China, on 21 October 2026 by Gentari Group CEO Sushil Purohit and BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma.
Under the MoU, both sides will look at:
- Locations, especially “key intercity corridors connecting major population centres”. Read: highway R&Rs.
- Power infrastructure needed at each site.
- Battery energy storage requirements.
- Technical and commercial considerations, project development and possible operating models.
- Tie-ups in renewable energy generation and energy storage.
This is on top of the selected BYD and Denza outlets that BYD Malaysia already named as its first locations.
What is BYD Flash Charging?
It’s BYD’s ultra-fast DC charging system, rated at up to 1,500kW (1.5MW), and it works together with a battery energy storage system on site. BYD says a compatible car can add about 400 km of range in five minutes. It also quotes 10 to 70% in about five minutes and 10 to 97% in about nine minutes. Those are manufacturer figures. Treat them as best case.
For perspective, a single-phase home wallbox in Malaysia tops out at 7.4kW. A Flash Charger is about 200 times that.
So why the batteries? Pulling 1.5MW straight from the grid at a highway stop is a big ask. A battery energy storage system (BESS) fills up from the grid over time, then dumps that energy into your car quickly. The grid doesn’t have to supply everything at once.
Is BYD Flash Charging confirmed for Malaysia?
Partly. In June 2026 BYD Malaysia confirmed it would bring the tech here, starting at selected BYD and Denza showrooms and service centres. Locations, pricing and launch date were not given then, and still haven’t been.
The Gentari MoU is about the next step: getting these chargers out of showrooms and onto intercity routes. That part is still being studied.

Which cars can use BYD Flash Charging in Malaysia?
Right now, only the Denza Z9 GT. It launched here in July 2026.
Back in June, Jacob Ma said the chargers would also be open to non-BYD brands in future, as long as the car is compatible. Any car will still be capped by its own maximum DC charging rate. If your EV takes 150kW max, that’s what you get, even on a 1,500kW charger.
Why does Gentari matter here?
Gentari operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Its Gentari Go Roaming Hub gives access to about 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.
That network and operating experience is what Gentari brings. Purohit put it this way: “Malaysia’s EV market is growing, but the next phase of adoption will depend on the quality, convenience and reliability of the charging experience. Speed is one part of that equation.”
BYD vice president Liu Xueliang called Malaysia “an important market for BYD”.
The timing makes sense. According to The Edge, Malaysia recorded 53,537 new EV registrations in the first nine months of 2026, nearly double the same period last year.
Fair point from Purohit, actually. A 1.5MW charger looks great on paper. Broken, always occupied, or in the wrong place? Useless. Reliability and placement will decide if this works for Malaysian drivers.
Should this change which EV you buy?
Not yet, lah. Nothing in this MoU is locked in, and only one car on sale here can use the full speed. Don’t pay extra for a car just because of a highway charger that doesn’t exist yet.
For most owners, home charging still does the heavy lifting. Public ultra-fast charging matters most on long trips, like a KL to Penang run.
Frequently asked questions
What is BYD Flash Charging?
BYD’s megawatt-level DC fast-charging system, rated at up to 1,500kW. It works with battery energy storage on site so it can deliver very high power without straining the grid.
How fast is BYD Flash Charging?
BYD claims about 400 km of range in roughly five minutes for compatible cars under optimal conditions, with 10 to 70% in about five minutes and 10 to 97% in about nine minutes. Real-world times will vary.
When will BYD Flash Charging be available in Malaysia?
No launch date has been announced as of October 2026. BYD Malaysia says the first stations will be at selected BYD and Denza showrooms. The Gentari MoU covers exploring more sites, such as intercity corridors.
Can non-BYD cars use BYD Flash Charging?
BYD Malaysia has said the chargers will be open to compatible non-BYD cars in future. They will charge at their own maximum DC rate, not 1,500kW.
Which cars support Flash Charging in Malaysia?
The Denza Z9 GT is currently the only model sold in Malaysia that supports it.
Is Gentari owned by Petronas?
Yes. Gentari is the clean energy arm of Petronas, and operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia.
