The whole of 2025 saw 44,813 electric cars registered. So with a quarter still to go, 2026 has already passed it.
What share of new cars in Malaysia are electric?

Which EV brands sold the most in Malaysia in 2026?
Proton e.MAS led from January to September 2026 with about 24,900 units, followed by BYD with about 8,100. Those are TA Research figures reported by Focus Malaysia on 19 October 2026. The JPJ data on data.gov.my lands on almost the same totals: 24,857 for Proton e.MAS (20,327 e.MAS 5 and 4,530 e.MAS 7) and 8,087 for BYD.
So the local brand is far ahead. Proton e.MAS alone makes up close to half of all electric cars registered this year.
What does the BYD and Inokom deal mean?
BYD Malaysia has appointed Inokom Corporation as its local CKD assembly partner, through an MoU signed in Shenzhen on 15 October 2026. Inokom runs a plant in Kulim, Kedah. TA Research says local assembly could make BYD’s pricing more competitive, but it’s keeping a Neutral view on the auto sector overall.
For buyers, “could” is the key word. Local assembly doesn’t automatically mean cheaper cars, and no price changes have been announced. We’d wait for real figures before holding off on a purchase.
What this means if you’re buying an EV
More EVs on the road means more people looking for a home charger at the same time. That can stretch installer waiting lists. If you’re planning to buy, sort out charging early. Check whether your home is single-phase or three-phase, since that decides which chargers make sense. Our best home EV chargers in Malaysia guide compares the options, and the EV charging cost calculator shows what charging at home will roughly cost you. Then make sure your installer is registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST). Our installer directory is a good place to start.
