Leapmotor just showed off their new Lafa 5 at some big car show in Munich. And honestly, it looks pretty solid for us Malaysian drivers who want something modern but not too expensive.

What Makes This Car Special?

The Lafa 5 has those curved LED headlights that look quite premium. The door handles can retract, just like those expensive Tesla cars. There’s a nice spoiler at the back and the taillights stretch across the whole width. Very Instagram worthy if you ask me.

This small hatchback has LiDAR on the roof. You know what that is? It’s that sensor technology that helps with self driving features. Most affordable EVs don’t have this kind of tech. Usually you only see it on cars costing RM200k and above.

Size and Performance

The car is about the same size as the Volkswagen ID.3. That’s roughly 4.2 meters long, which is perfect for our Malaysian roads. Not too big for parking at shopping malls, but spacious enough for your family.

Under the hood, or should I say under the floor, there’s a rear motor that puts out around 215 horsepower. The battery is about 67 kWh. That should give you decent range for daily driving around KL or Penang. You can probably drive from KL to Ipoh without worrying about charging.

The Tech Inside

Remember I mentioned the LiDAR? This thing will help with advanced safety features. Think automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, and maybe even some basic self parking. Perfect for those tight parking spots at Mid Valley or 1Utama.

The car runs on something called LEAP 3.5 platform. Sounds fancy, but what it means is that Leapmotor designed it to be efficient and practical for both city driving and highway trips.

Is It Headed to Malaysia?

Leapmotor is already selling cars here. You’ve probably seen the C10 SUV and the smaller T03 around town. The company is doing quite well globally too. Their sales jumped 88% compared to last year. They even made their first profit recently.

The Lafa 5 could fill a nice gap in our market. Right now, if you want an affordable electric hatchback, your choices are quite limited. You have the MG4, some BYD models, and the VW ID.3 if you don’t mind paying more. The Lafa 5 could be a good middle ground. But right now, Leapmotor Malaysia seems to pushing for the C10 in this market. The Lafa 5 might take quite a while before it even reach our shores.

Who Should Consider This Car?

Leapmotor says this car is for young people who want innovation and style. But honestly, I think it’s good for anyone who drives mostly in the city. The compact size makes it easy to maneuver through traffic jams. The electric drivetrain means you save on petrol costs. And the tech features make daily driving less stressful.

What We Don’t Know Yet

The company hasn’t announced Malaysian pricing or the exact launch date here. They also haven’t confirmed which features will be available in our market. Sometimes car companies remove certain features to hit lower price points.

But based on their other models already selling here, I expect the Lafa 5 to be competitively priced. Probably somewhere between the cheapest EVs and the premium German ones.
