Finally lah! Proton has just launched the long awaited e.MAS 5, officially making it Malaysia’s cheapest electric vehicle. Bookings opened on October 4, 2025, through a special livestream event recently.

This B-segment hatchback isn’t just another car launch. It’s a legit EV game changer for Malaysians who want to go electric without breaking the bank.

Budget Friendly EV

Here’s the best part: the e.MAS 5 is priced between RM60,000 to RM80,000. Yes, you read that right. This makes it way cheaper than most electric vehicles in Malaysia, which usually cost over RM100,000.

How did Proton manage this? Simple. They’re manufacturing it locally instead of importing completely-built-up units like other brands. This pricing strategy puts electric mobility within reach for everyday Malaysians who previously thought EVs were too expensive.

Two Variants to Choose From

Proton knows different people have different needs and budgets. That’s why they’re offering two variants of the e.MAS 5.

Prime Variant: The Budget-Friendly Option

The Prime variant comes with:

  • 58kW motor producing 78 horsepower and 130Nm of torque
  • 30.12kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery
  • 225km range on a single charge (WLTP rated)
  • Can go from 0 to 50km/h in just 4.4 seconds
  • Top speed of 125km/h
  • 15-inch steel wheels
  • Road tax of only RM30 per year (agak-agak)

Premium Variant: More Power, More Range

If you want extra performance, the Premium variant offers:

  • 85kW motor with 114 horsepower and 150Nm of torque
  • Bigger 40.16kWh CATL battery
  • Extended 325km range
  • Faster 0 to 50km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds
  • Higher top speed of 135km/h
  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Road tax of RM60 per year (agak-agak)

Both variants use the same reliable CATL lithium iron phosphate battery technology. The difference is mainly in power output and range, so you can pick what suits your driving habits best.

Decent Tech For Its Price

Don’t think Proton skimped on technology just because the price is low. The e.MAS 5 comes loaded with modern features that you’ll actually use.

Inside, you’ll find an 8.8-inch digital dashboard paired with a large 14.6-inch touchscreen. The infotainment system runs on an automotive-grade chip and supports both wireless and wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. No more fumbling with cables every time you get in the car.

The interior feels premium too, with leatherette steering wheel and leather seats across both variants. Proton also included their Atlas operating system with support for English and Bahasa Malaysia, plus a live charging map to help you find charging stations easily.

One nice touch is the powered tailgate. It might seem small, but when you’re carrying groceries or luggage, you’ll appreciate not having to lift the boot manually.

Swift Charging

Both variants support DC fast charging, which means you can charge from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes. That’s barely enough time to grab a kopi and check your phone.

For home charging, the Premium variant takes about 5.9 hours for a full charge using AC power. The Prime variant is even faster, needing only 4.3 hours to go from 10% to 100%. You can easily charge overnight and wake up to a full battery.

Early Bird Specials Worth Grabbing

Proton is sweetening the deal for early adopters. The first 5,000 customers get a RM500 rebate on their booking fee. You also receive a limited-edition Proton e.MAS Touch ‘n Go NFC card preloaded with RM100 credit. OK la better than nothing.
