Every EV owner need to know about this TNB Automatic Fuel Adjustment thing. So basically, TNB scrapped their old system where they adjust prices twice a year. Now they do it every month based on fuel prices worldwide. And for October 2025, we’re gonna get a big ‘discount’.
How This AFA Thing Works
The new system adjusts your electricity bill monthly. But don’t panic yet. TNB can only adjust maximum 3 sen per kWh each month. If they want to go higher, they need Cabinet approval. So cannot simply whack us with huge increases.
Before this, we had something called ICPT. That one adjust twice a year only. Sometimes you kena big shock when the bill comes. Now at least the changes are smaller and more predictable.
The best part? When global fuel prices drop, we get rebates. And that’s exactly what’s happening now.
October 2025 Jackpot for EV Owners
October 2025 is like striking a mini-lottery for EV owners. We’re getting 6.50 sen rebate per kWh. That’s a lot more than September’s 1.10 sen rebate.
Say you charge your EV at home and use about 330 kWh monthly. That’s like charging a 66 kWh car five times lah. With this October rebate, you save about RM21.45 just on the energy part of your bill.
Protection for Small Users
If you use 600 kWh or less per month, you don’t get affected by AFA at all. Whether it’s rebate or surcharge, you’re exempted.
But let’s be real. If you charge EV at home regularly, you’ll probably go over 600 kWh. So you’ll get the rebates when times are good, but might pay extra when fuel prices naik.
Understanding Your New TNB Bill
Since July 2025, your TNB bill looks different. Now got five components :
- Generation charge
- Capacity charge
- Network charge
- Retail charge
- AFA
For normal house usage up to 1,500 kWh monthly, you pay 27.03 sen per kWh for generation. Go over that and it’s 37.03 sen per kWh. Plus got capacity charge 4.55 sen per kWh, network charge 12.85 sen per kWh, and fixed RM10 retail charge every month.
Looks complicated but actually more transparent. You can see exactly how fuel costs affect your bill.
Why This is Good for EV Owners
The monthly adjustments are actually better for us EV drivers. Instead of getting shocked by big price jumps twice a year, we get smaller changes monthly.
Plus, the Energy Commission publishes the projected AFA rates three months ahead. So you can plan your charging budget better. No more surprise bills that make you question your life choices.
Smart Charging Can Save You More
Here’s a pro tip. Combine the AFA benefits with TNB’s Time-of-Use tariff. Off-peak hours are 10 PM to 2 PM on weekdays, plus all day Saturday and Sunday.
If you’re smart about when you charge, you can almost double up on savings. Charge during off-peak hours when rates are lower, and enjoy the monthly AFA rebates on top of that.
You work normal hours, so you’re probably home evenings anyway. Set your car to charge after 10 PM or during weekends. Your wallet will thank you.
